Privacy policy
Mealwick keeps your kitchen on your phone. This page says exactly what stays there, what leaves it and why, and how to get in touch.
Draft, for lawyer review. This is an honest description of how the app works today. It has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer and will be updated before the app is released on the stores. Last updated 6 October 2026.

1. Who we are
Mealwick is a mobile app for iPhone and Android that helps you keep track of the food in your fridge, freezer and pantry, and cook from it. It is made and operated by Aventine, the studio of Zane Volschenk, until a registered company takes over the app. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean Aventine as the operator of Mealwick.
You can reach us at support@mealwick.com.
2. What stays on your phone
Almost everything you do in Mealwick is stored only on your own phone, in the app’s private storage. This includes:
- The food in your fridge, freezer and pantry, with amounts and dates, and your used-up history.
- Your shopping list, meal plan, leftovers and anything on the counter.
- Recipes you import or save, and which recipes you have cooked.
- How you cook: servings, diet, allergies, dislikes and the cuisines you like.
- The names and roles you give to people in your household.
- Settings such as region, units, appearance, reminders and which tips you have seen.
This information is not sent to us unless you turn on household sharing (see section 5) or ask Chef a question (see section 4). If you delete the app, it is deleted with it. We cannot recover it for you.
Your region (the country your phone is set to) is read from your phone’s settings to choose units, currency, date formats and local food names. It stays on the phone.
3. What leaves your phone, and when
Mealwick only connects to the internet for a few specific things, each one started by you.
| When you | What is sent | To whom |
|---|---|---|
| Scan a barcode | The barcode number only. No photo, no location. | Open Food Facts, a non-profit food database, so the app can name the product. |
| Import a recipe from a link | The app fetches that web page, in the same way a browser would. | The website you linked to. |
| Ask Chef a question with the AI service | See section 4. | Our server, then Anthropic. |
| Sign in and share with a household | See section 5. | Our server, hosted on Supabase. |
| Subscribe to Premium | See section 6. | Apple or Google, and RevenueCat. |
| Share a picture from the app | The image you chose to share, using your phone’s share sheet. | Whatever app or person you pick. |
Nothing else is sent anywhere. The app does not contact any server in the background.
4. Chef and AI
Chef is the assistant in the app. Many of its answers are worked out on your phone, with no internet needed, from what is in your kitchen and the recipe library.
When the AI service is available and you ask Chef a question that uses it, the app sends to our server:
- Your question, and the last three exchanges of that conversation so Chef can follow it.
- Up to 15 of the kitchen items most relevant to your question (names, amounts and dates), not your whole kitchen.
- Your food preferences: diet, allergies, dislikes and liked cuisines, so suggestions suit you.
Our server passes this to Anthropic’s Claude model to write the answer, under Anthropic’s commercial terms, which do not permit Anthropic to use the content to train its models. We do not use your questions to train anything either. Our server keeps a count of how many questions and AI recipes your account or household has used each month, because there is a monthly allowance per plan and a spending limit that protects the service. Conversations are not stored on our server beyond what is needed to answer them.
Chef is for cooking. It will only suggest real foods and recipes, and it does not give medical, allergy or nutrition advice you should rely on. Always check labels if you have an allergy.
5. Household sharing and your account
Sharing a kitchen with other people is optional. Until you sign in, there is no account and nothing about you is stored on our server.
If you sign in, you do so with your email address and a one-time code sent to it. We then store on our server, hosted by Supabase:
- Your email address and an account identifier.
- The household you create or join, the names and roles of its members, and the invite code.
- The shared kitchen contents, shopping list and requests, so every member sees the same thing.
- Your subscription tier, so one Premium subscription can cover the whole household.
Other members of your household can see the shared kitchen and lists, and the names you have chosen for members. They cannot see your email address. You can leave a household at any time, and you can ask us to delete your account and everything stored with it (see section 10).
6. Subscriptions and payments
Premium is sold as a subscription through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google. We never see your card number, bank details or billing address.
To know whether a subscription is active, the app uses RevenueCat, a service that reads the purchase receipt from the store. RevenueCat gives us an anonymous identifier and the status of the subscription. If you have signed in, that status is linked to your account so your household benefits too.
The free trial, the price and renewals are shown and managed by the store. You cancel in your Apple or Google account settings, not in the app.
7. Phone permissions
- Camera: only to scan barcodes when you open the scanner. No photos are taken, stored or sent.
- Notifications: reminders before food goes off, defrost reminders, your shopping day and planning nudges. These are scheduled on your phone by the app itself. Mealwick does not use push notifications from a server.
- Haptics and motion: small vibrations for feedback. The app respects your phone’s reduce-motion setting.
Mealwick does not ask for your location, contacts, photos or microphone.
8. No ads, no tracking
Mealwick has no advertising, no analytics software and no tracking of any kind. It does not use cookies or advertising identifiers, and it does not share or sell data to data brokers. This website does not use cookies or analytics either.
9. Children
Mealwick is meant to be set up and managed by adults. An adult in a household may add children as members so they can see the kitchen and request things for the shopping list. The only information about a child is the name the adult types in. Children do not have accounts of their own and cannot use the AI service.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the age of consent where you live). If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Your choices and rights
- Local data: delete the app to delete everything stored on your phone.
- Account and household data: email us from the address you signed in with and we will delete your account and the data stored with it, usually within 30 days. If you created a household, its shared data is deleted too unless another member has taken over.
- Access and correction: you can see and change everything in the app itself. If you want a copy of what is stored on our server, ask us.
- Notifications: turn each kind of reminder on or off in the app under Me, Reminders, or in your phone’s settings.
Depending on where you live, you may have further rights under laws such as the GDPR in Europe, the UK GDPR, the CCPA in California or POPIA in South Africa, including the right to complain to your local data protection authority. We will honour these rights wherever you are.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles your data, we will update this page and the date at the top, and tell you in the app if the change matters to you.
